Why we built GetCitedShop (and why only for Shopify)

Why I left a generic AI search SaaS approach and built a Shopify-specific toolkit instead. The technical bet behind Schema-Stitch architecture, the three product tiers, and the mission to make AI search infrastructure accessible to every serious Shopify merchant — not just enterprise brands.

A store being cited by AI engines - Why we built GetCitedShop
◆ TL;DR

I run Rankeo, a SaaS that tracks how AI engines cite websites. After auditing hundreds of stores, I realized Shopify merchants face a specific AI search problem that generic SEO tools can't solve. So I built GetCitedShop — a toolkit designed exclusively for Shopify, by someone who understands both the platform and the new mechanics of AI citations. This is why.

How this started

In 2025, I was deep in building Rankeo, a B2B SaaS that helps companies track and improve their visibility on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. The thesis was simple: AI search was eating traditional SEO faster than most marketers realized, and brands needed a way to measure and fix their citation rates.

What I didn't expect was the pattern that emerged after auditing site after site.

Most B2B SaaS sites I audited had a fixable problem. Their schema was wrong, their content was structured for old-school SEO, their llms.txt was missing. Standard issues. Standard fixes.

But every time a Shopify store landed in my audit queue, something different happened.

The store had a beautiful theme. Great product photography. Decent traffic from Google. And ChatGPT had no idea it existed.

I'd type "best running shoes for flat feet" into ChatGPT. The brand selling exactly that product, ranking #4 on Google for that exact query, generating $80k a month — zero mention. ChatGPT cited Runner's World, a Reddit thread from 2022, and a Medium article that hadn't been updated in eighteen months.

This happened over and over.

The Shopify-specific problem

I started digging into why. Generic SaaS sites I audited could be fixed with standard schema markup, a better content structure, and an llms.txt file. The same fixes on Shopify stores didn't work the same way.

Quick takeaway: Shopify stores have a unique technical profile — product schemas, collection pages, dynamic catalog — that doesn't translate cleanly to AI search optimization advice written for generic websites.

Three things made Shopify different.

First, the schema layer. Most Shopify themes ship with a basic Product schema and nothing else. No Organization, no WebSite with SearchAction, no BreadcrumbList, no FAQPage. AI engines walk the entity graph to understand who you are, what you sell, and why you matter. Shopify stores were giving them one isolated fragment instead of a connected web.

Second, the apps problem. Every Shopify merchant has tried installing a schema app. Most of them inject JSON-LD via JavaScript after the page loads. AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript. So that beautiful schema you're paying $29 a month for? AI engines never see it.

Third, the May 2026 llms.txt rollout. Shopify rolled out a native /llms.txt endpoint in May 2026, which is great. But it's auto-generated, not customizable, and it doesn't replace the strategic content you need on /pages/llms-txt to actually shape what AI engines learn about your brand.

None of the existing tools — not the schema apps, not the SEO platforms, not the AI search SaaS products — addressed all three together.

Why I didn't just add Shopify support to Rankeo

The obvious move was to keep building Rankeo and add Shopify-specific features. I considered it for about two weeks.

Three reasons I didn't.

01

Shopify merchants don't want a SaaS subscription

They want results. A merchant doing $50k a month doesn't want another $99 monthly tool. They want to install something once and have it work. The right product for them isn't a dashboard — it's code they paste into their theme and forget about.

02

The work is fundamentally different

Rankeo measures and tracks. GetCitedShop implements and ships. Different problem, different product. Forcing them into the same SaaS would have made both worse.

03

I wanted to build with Shopify, not on top of it

Shopify is a remarkable platform. The Liquid templating, the metafields system, the theme architecture — it's elegant when you respect it. Building a SaaS that abstracts it away felt wrong. I wanted to write Liquid snippets and configure metafields the way Shopify designed it.

What GetCitedShop actually is

GetCitedShop is a toolkit. Not a SaaS, not an app, not a subscription. You buy what you need once, install it, and own it.

Three product lines, each with a clear job:

TIER 2

AI-Ready Schema Kits

Liquid snippets you paste into your existing theme. Three packages — Lite, Pro, Agency — covering everything from basic schema to full multi-tenant deployment for agencies.

For: Merchants who already have a theme they love and want to add the AI search layer.

TIER 3

Cited Theme

A complete Shopify theme with the optimization stack pre-installed. Schema-Stitch, llms.txt template, robots.txt with AI crawler whitelist, Answer Capsule metafields — all of it, ready to go.

For: Merchants who want turnkey — no code, no setup, just install and publish.

TIER 4

Expert Implementation

A hands-on engagement where my team audits your store, implements the architecture, writes Answer Capsules for your priority pages, and tracks citations across all major AI engines.

For: Established merchants doing $30k+ a month who want it done right, by experts, without managing it themselves.

That's it. No upsells, no monthly anything. Buy once, install, get cited.

The technical bet

Everything in GetCitedShop is built on three technical decisions that I'm willing to defend in any room.

Quick takeaway: Server-rendered schemas, native Shopify primitives, zero third-party dependencies. These three rules eliminate 90% of the failure modes I saw in audited stores.

One: server-rendered, never JavaScript-injected. Every schema, every Answer Capsule, every llms.txt endpoint renders from Shopify's Liquid templating engine before the page hits the browser. AI crawlers don't need to execute JavaScript to read it. This sounds basic but it's what 95% of Shopify schema apps get wrong.

Two: native Shopify primitives, not parallel data stores. Your Answer Capsules live in Shopify metafields. Your llms.txt is generated from your product catalog. Your robots.txt is a Liquid template. Everything stays inside Shopify so it survives theme updates, app uninstalls, and platform changes.

Three: no third-party app dependencies, ever. Schema apps inject duplicates. AI optimization apps add JavaScript. SEO apps slow your site down. GetCitedShop ships as code you own. No app marketplace dependencies, no monthly fees, no "we're shutting down" emails.

◆ The mission

I want every serious Shopify merchant — not just the ones who can afford a $50,000 SEO agency — to have access to the same AI search infrastructure that enterprise brands are scrambling to build right now. That means clear pricing, owned code, and documentation that respects your time.

Why now

If you're reading this in 2026 and you're still thinking about AI search as "something to figure out next year," you're already behind.

Google AI Overviews now appears on roughly 47% of commercial queries. ChatGPT's shopping mode launched in early 2026 and is reshaping how people discover products. Perplexity's commerce features are generating real referral traffic for the brands they cite. Gemini's product recommendations are surfacing in Google's commerce surfaces.

None of this is theoretical. It's happening right now, this quarter, in your customers' search behavior.

The Shopify merchants who get cited in the next 12 months will compound advantage. AI engines remember. Once a brand becomes the default answer for a query, getting displaced is hard. The merchants who delay until 2027 will spend years trying to catch up.

The cost of being early to AI search is the time you spend implementing it. The cost of being late is being invisible while your competitor becomes the default answer.

What's next

GetCitedShop launches with three product lines and a growing library of guides. Over the next few months, I'll be publishing the data, the technical deep-dives, and the case studies that show exactly how AI search visibility moves on a Shopify store. Some of it will be useful. Some of it will be uncomfortable.

If you run a Shopify store and any of this resonates, the best next step is to browse the Schema Kits or book a strategy call. If you're not ready to buy anything, that's fine — the buying guides are free and they go deep.

Either way, I'm glad you're here.
